An Introduction to the Drills for Basketball Blog

When I started coaching basketball about 12 years ago it was more out of necessity than any planned design. My son needed a coach and no one was willing to step up to do it. I had been a coach and vice president for the local little league and had always had a love for basketball. However, my experiences with it were more along the lines of playing with friends in school and watching and rooting for the state college team.

My first step was to go to the nearest Barnes and Nobles and buy every book on coaching youth basketball that I could. Most of them were books of drills for basketball and that is what I started developing my practices around. They were of various levels of help. Some spent a lot of time on organizing practices.  Others were heavier on individual drills such as basketball shooting drills, basketball dribbling drills, passing and individual general basketball skills. So with 100’s of drills to choose from it was left up to me to pick which drills to run in the limited time we had to practice and the limited skills of the players at that age.

As time went on I started to find resources on the internet. With that came videos so that I could see more fully what the drills should look like. Which was kind of scary when I think of how they actually looked when we first ran them. This gave me more insight and more drills to choose from. In fact there were so many choices to choose from it almost became overwhelming. There were hundreds of sites, hundreds of videos, and as many books and articles on drills.

Now that my coaching days are over, a combination of my children growing up, and the school I coached at closing down (not my fault honestly), I decided to start a blog to help other parents and coaches navigate some of the treacherous waters of drills for basketball, instructional videos and the tremendous number of websites out there dedicated to the wonderful and exciting game that I have come to love.

It is my intent to cover a wide range of subject matter on this blog with the intent of it being for the parent that is helping their child to become a better player, and the youth coach that wants to become a better coach. I would also love to hear from parents and coaches out there about their favorite basketball drills, videos, books or coaching experiences.
