When I started coaching basketball about 12 years ago it was more out of necessity than any planned design. My son needed a coach and no one was willing to step up to do it. I had been a coach and vice president for the local little league and had always had a love for basketball. However, my experiences with it were more along the lines of playing with friends in school and watching and rooting for the state college team.

My first step was to go to the nearest Barnes and Nobles and buy every book on coaching youth basketball that I could. Most of them were books of drills for basketball and that is what I started developing my practices around. They were of various levels of help. Some spent a lot of time on organizing practices. Others were heavier on individual drills such as basketball shooting drills, basketball dribbling drills, passing and individual general basketball skills. So with 100′s of drills to choose from it was left up to me to pick which drills to run in the limited time we had to practice and the limited skills of the players at that age.

As time went on I started to find resources on the internet. With that came videos so that I could see more fully what the drills should look like. Which was kind of scary when I think of how they actually looked when we first ran them. This gave me more insight and more drills to choose from. In fact there were so many choices to choose from it almost became overwhelming. There were hundreds of sites, hundreds of videos, and as many books and articles on drills.

Now that my coaching days are over, a combination of my children growing up, and the school I coached at closing down (not my fault honestly), I decided to start a blog to help other parents and coaches navigate some of the treacherous waters of drills for basketball, instructional videos and the tremendous number of websites out there dedicated to the wonderful and exciting game that I have come to love.

It is my intent to cover a wide range of subject matter on this blog with the intent of it being for the parent that is helping their child to become a better player, and the youth coach that wants to become a better coach. I would also love to hear from parents and coaches out there about their favorite basketball drills, videos, books or coaching experiences.

Jumping is a key aspect of basketball. Some of the very first basketball fundamental drills involve learning to elevate. It is critical in so many aspects of the game, from shooting where good elevation leads to stronger consistency as the upper body does not have to strain to get the power needed, to rebounding and defense. The ability to get good vertical leap is a science in and of itself.

Jacob Hiller’s Jump Manual is no doubt the most comprehensive Vertical Jump Training Program you can find on the market today. This program has already helped thousands of athletes, basketball players and dancers to increase their vertical leaps to the desired height which will enable them to be more competitive.

Though this program is so popular, there are many people who don’t yet know about it, and don’t yet know how much it cost. Jacob charges $67 for the jump manual. This includes the Jump Manual Guide, and personal caching for one full month. This personal coaching is done though emails. You also get access to the forum of elite jumpers where you will find other people who are also used the jump manual to increase their vertical jumps. It is important to note here that Jacob is always in this forum to help answer questions from those who may need some help using his program.

Athletes who feel the need for continuing the emails coaching after the one month period is over can do so at a very modest monthly fee. This in itself is a very good thing about the jump manual program since the success of every athlete greatly depends on the personal guides he or she receives from the coach, in this case Jacob Hiller.

If you want to increase your vertical jump, then the jump manual is the best guide which can help you do this. The jump manual is reasonably priced at $67, especially when you consider the quality and the effectiveness of this product.

Download the Jump Manual Program Here: Jump Manual.

Well the summer is over. The summer leagues are finished, and the school and recreational programs are a few months away. Now is the time to work on the fundamentals. Whether your child has just become old enough to join their first local basketball league or is gearing up for their senior year of high school, this is a great opportunity to learn or refresh their fundamental basketball skills. Work on refreshing or learning the mechanics of a consistent, accurate shot, with some basketball shooting drills geared to the form. work on dribbling drills to add to their comfort and control of the basketball. Go back to the fundamentals with these drills. There are 100′s of drills for each, and sometimes we get wrapped up in the most complex and sophisticated drills. However, no mater what level your child is at, it pays to come back to the very beginner drills every so often. As players start to run drills concentrating on getting their shot off or shooting off a pass, or shooting coming off a screen, there is a tendency to rush the shot and form deteriorates. Over time and with repetition the form degradation slowly increases. Going back to the basics reminds the child and as importantly the child’s body of the proper motion. It rebuilds muscle memory so that when the player is running the more complicated drills their bodies will more naturally use the proper technique.

When I decided to set up this site I put away the more complex drills at first. I decided I wanted to emphasize the basics as without these everything down the road becomes more difficult. Only after I have thoroughly added all the fundamental drills I have to share will I add the more detailed and advanced ones. However, I do realize that especially with the basketball season fast approaching some will want more complex drills. So to satisfy them until I can add them all here, I will try to make a point on every post to share a few sites that I have found that provide some useful drills and information. Here are a few that I have recently found of interest.

I have just started to add the actual drills for basketball to my site and I must confess I am as excited by doing it as I was when I first started researching to become a coach. It has reawakened that love for the intricacies and subtleties of this wonderful game that have laid dormant since I stopped coaching. I have been going through my old videos, my old notes and practices, and exploring the net to see what new and exciting resources are there. What I have found is there is no better time in history to be a youth basketball coach. There is so much information available that you could spend the next five years studying, researching and learning, without cracking a dent in the knowledge base. Information that once required being associated with an elite basketball program is readily passed out for all to learn, often free or for very little money.

YouTube alone has 100′s if not 1,000′s of videos dedicated to a wide variety of subjects relating to learning basketball. The degree of usefulness of these videos range from a complete waste of time to a must have. The talent level behind these videos also ranges widely from complete unknowns to some of the legends of the game. The name behind the video does not always correspond to the degree of helpfulness though. Often someone that I have never heard of did a better job of relaying the fundamentals of basketball then do the stars that may find it hard to put into words the skills that they have honed for so many years. Still for someone of my age to watch the legendary Pistol Pete Maravich go into great detail about the art of shooting is thrilling.

In addition to the videos on YouTube there are 1,000 of sites dedicated to helping coaches, players and parents learn and teach the skills required to be a good if not great basketball player. These also run the gamut of quality ranging from sites no more than a squeeze page to sell you something, to full detailed sites giving countless bits of free information, to professionally done training programs.

Then there are the countless videos and books for sale. I have started going through my own personal library to find the ones that I found most helpful and although no longer coaching I am looking forward to adding to them. I find that once again I cannot get enough of learning about this exciting sport. In these pages over the next several months I will start passing along what I have learned, and what I will continue to learn. Hopefully it will help you as a parent or coach to find the resources you need to develop your child or players into the best basektball players they can be. When ever possible I will provide the information on my site so it is easily usable as a one stop resource. When its not I will direct you to the sites, books, and videos that I believe will help you most.

An example of the later is a great series of basketball shooting drills and instructional videos offered by the previously mentioned Maravich. I would love to have embedded them in my blog when discussing shooting, but unlike most YouTube videos the are not available for that. But they are a very detailed breakdown of shooting form from one of the all time great basketball shooters and are worth a look, actually probably several looks. I am sure I will be adding the links when I get into the fundamentals of basketball shooting. However, I can’t seem to wait until then and want to share them now as they are such a pleasure to watch. Here is the link to the first one and the others are easily found when you open this link. Pistol Pete Maravich’s shooting video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Whether you are a coach or a parent, one of the most important things you will do when teaching basketball skills is picking age appropriate drills. If you are a coach your practice time with your team is limited and picking the wrong drills for basketball means that the valuable skills that your players need will not be developed. And often the drills you are working on won’t succeed because the skills needed to accomplish them aren’t there. For a parent it is just as important to pick the right drills as your child’s love for the game and therefore their success with it will often develop from the successes they achieve with the drills. If you start them off with drills that are too complex or require prior skills that they haven’t mastered, not only can it get them frustrated and have them lose interest, but it can also make them develop bad form. This can often result in temporary success at the drill, while ensuring long term failure at the skill. I often wonder when seeing some of the shooting styles of players that lack any semblance of good technique, how much of it is because they started shooting at hoops too high or from a distance to far, forcing them to chuck up the ball just so they can see it hit the rim and occasionally go in.
So what is age appropriate? When you start searching for drills for basketball you will find an endless supplies. In my own library I have numerous books. Online there untold sites devoted to them, and you could spend a small fortune on videos with countless drills. I know I have and have not even scratched the surface of those that are out there. One of the things I will attempt to do with this blog when discussing drills for basketball is identifying at what age they are appropriate for the child. In order to do this I will break it down into a range of ages to start these drills. I will also break it down within these age ranges into difficulty levels of preparatory, beginner, intermediate and advanced. It is however important to remember that there is such a wide variety of coordination development amongst children that these age brackets are not written in stone. Always consider the individual child’s abilities and swing the range up or down to meet them. Build their development on small successes and you will have a happy and successful basketball player, and even more importantly a happy and successful child.
