Beginner Drills for Basketball – Shooting Drills – Partner Shooting Drill

A drill designed to work on the fundamentals of the basketball shot. This drill connects the upward movement of the lower body with the shooting of the ball with the upper body. It helps to develop a smooth basketball shooting form.

  1. Have two players stand opposite each other about 10 feet apart (you can adjust downward for younger children if they are not reaching their partner).

  2. Make sure they practice moving upward with their lower body like they did in the jumping drill and shooting the ball to their partner on the way up with the motion they developed in the sitting shooting drill.

  3. Point out that they are to notice the path the ball is taking. concentrating on releasing the ball on the way up and getting a good arc.

  4. The power for the shot should be from the legs and lower body. Make sure the upper body is not rushing or forcing the ball.

  5. Teach them that power, height and distance comes from the lower body and not from the upper body.

  6. Make a point of them noting how high and far the ball flies with different jumping height and strength.
