Beginner Drills for Basketball – Shooting Drills – Laying Down Shooting Drill

A basketball shooting fundamentals drill that is designed to isolate the arm movement and develop good basketball shooting form and motion for the upper body. This is a great drill for when the weather is to bad to get out and practice and you don’t have a gym available.

    1. lay down on your back either on the floor or your bed

    2. hold the ball in the set position as if you were about ready to begin your shot.

    3. shoot the ball up in the air so that the ball comes right back down to your hand. You do this by:

    • extending your arm straight upwards
    • letting your wrist fall forward naturally without any force of the wrist. (practice without the ball and notice how the wrist will flop forward naturally. It will also bounce back some if you are not forcing it)
    • holding your shooting arm straight while the ball is in the air. Keep it there until the ball comes back down to it
    • catching the ball with your shooting hand. Try to catch it with the your fingers and the pads of your hand. You do not want it to land in your palm.

    4. Return to the starting position and repeat drill.
