Beginner Drills for Basketball – Triple Threat Position

Start with the lower body.

1. Feet should be approximately shoulder width apart.
2. Have toes pointed towards the basket.
3. Dominate foot (right for right handed shooter, left foot for left handed shooter) should be 2-3 inches forward of the other foot.
4. Legs are slightly bent (you want the player to play low. Have them bounce up and down on the balls of their feet)
5. The back should be straight and close to upright with the players head up and butt sticking out.
6. Balance – the players head and center of gravity should be in the center of the body.

Upper Body

1. The ball is held with the dominate hand on back of the ball.
2. Ball is held on the finger tips and the pads of the hand not in the palm of hand. A good visual to tell the player is to
have a “shooting window” in the palm that you can look into through a small space between the index finger and
the thumb of shooting hand.
3. Fingers are spread with the index and middle finger splitting the air valve on the ball.
4. Dominate wrist is cocked behind the ball (look for a wrinkle behind the wrist), the elbow is under the ball.
5. The off hand is on the side of the ball.
6. The shooting arm is at a 90 degree angle with the upper arm parallel to the floor
5. The Ball is held to the side of the body, just above the dominate hands knee. It is held tight to the body. The dominate toes (right foot for right handed shooter), knee, wrist and elbow should be in a straight line.
